About this testing. All shampoos were tested by one reviewer (Charlie N.), fragrance-sensitive and autistic, using a six-stage protocol: dispense test, cold smell, wet smell, steam smell, lather and texture, and rinse. No conditioner used. Tested on fine to medium hair in hard water (South Downs chalk). Results reflect a specific set of sensory sensitivities and should be read accordingly. Full methodology → Simple Gentle Care is the most widely available shampoo in the batch and the one whose fragrance-free claim fails most clearly – the investigation found essential oils present and the sulfate-free claim doesn’t hold.

What these reviews are, and who they are for

Most fragrance-free shampoo reviews are written for people avoiding allergic reactions. These are written for people who notice more — who find that a shampoo marketed as unscented smells strongly in the shower, or that a “gentle” formula makes their hair squeak on the rinse, or that heavy foam is difficult to manage. The sensory details that mainstream reviews omit are the ones this site tests first.

Each review covers two dimensions separately: smell (strength, character, lingering) and texture & behaviour (foam volume, squeak on rinse, residue, packaging). Both dimensions are assessed using a consistent protocol across all products so results are comparable. A product can clear one dimension and flag on the other — that is common, and the verdict reflects both.

The signal system — Cleared, Caution, Flagged — replaces star ratings because star ratings average across dimensions that don’t average usefully. A shampoo that smells of nothing but squeaks loudly is not a three-star product. It is cleared on smell and flagged on texture. Those are different pieces of information, useful to different people.

What “fragrance-free” means — and the gap

The term fragrance-free refers to the absence of added parfum compounds. It does not refer to smell. Surfactants, botanical extracts, preservatives, and emulsifiers all have detectable odours — some mild, some strong — that become more pronounced in hot water and steam. Several products in this index carry “fragrance-free” or “unscented” claims while producing a noticeable smell during use. These are noted, not condemned. But they are noted.
