Do you remember where you were? Not for the moon landing. For the first Last Christmas of the season, arriving aggressively some time in late October and getting earlier every year. Mine, in 2025, was while grabbing lunch in a cafe before a meeting I was dreading. Feeling already three quarters overloaded in that noisy place. Wham! The opening bars were the final straw and finished me off. I got out of there, abandoning lunch. This song symbolises the worst of mindless noise pollution and represents the most offensive song I often need a pair of headphones to block out. Turns out, the old model of Bose’s flagship Quiet comfort blocked ‘I gave you my heart’ better than any other.

Verdict Cleared

The weakest canceller of the four flagships tested and the gentlest on the ears: lowest eardrum pressure at every timepoint, the faintest hiss, and the least self-hearing. Buy it if pressure is what ends your sessions.

BOSTLab Results

Controlled tests, reported in two halves: what the seal blocks physically, and what the electronics cancel on top. Environment trials follow further down.

Two kinds of quiet

Every result below comes from one of two mechanisms, and separating them explains most of what these products do. The first is physical isolation: the cups seal against the head and simply block sound, the way an earplug does. The clamp measurement below is the cost side of that seal, and the passive rows of the tone testing are its benefit side, no electronics involved.

The second is the active layer: microphones sample the noise, the software inverts it, and the speakers cancel it inside the sealed cup. The tone measurements show how much that layer removes beyond the seal alone, and the field trials confirm where it holds up in real rooms. The active layer also has a cost, and the investigation names it ICP: in-canal pressure, the eardrum-suck sensation the cancellation itself produces. It is measured over time below.

Bose quiet comfort tone test results

Nine test tones from 75 Hz to 15 kHz, three listening conditions. Higher on the chart means the tone stayed inaudible until played louder: more of it was blocked.

Reading the table: with cancellation on and nothing playing, this blocked most strongly at 15 kHz and let half the signal through at 2 kHz, the checkout-beep band. It trailed the Sony WH-1000XM6 across the low and middle range, which is why it finished last of the four on raw blocking, yet on most tones it sat within a few decibels of the Bose Ultra at nearly half the price.

Continuous music and speech under the same three conditions. Taller bars mean the sound had to be played louder before it reached the ear: more blocking.

Music and speech confound the mono-frequency testing with the QC original performing better than any other model. With music or pink noise playing through them you become pretty bullet proof to most intrusive noises.

Reading the table: blocking runs strongest at 15 kHz, the highest audible band, and weakest around 2 kHz, so checkout beeps range is where sound most survives the cancellation.

ICP (in-canal pressure): ANC pressure over time

ICP over a 90-minute quiet-room wearing, scored 1 (barely there) to 5 (must remove). ICP rises faster in loud environments as the ANC works harder.

The original Quietcomforts produced the lowest ICP (eardrum pressure) of the investigation to date. The reviewer’s hypothesis is that this is being caused when the ANC electronics are working harder to cancel out noise and have more welly behind them. Pressure tracks how hard the cancellation is working, and this is the weakest canceller of the set, so the gentlest ICP. On a noisy bus the ICP still became noticeable but less so than other models. It is worth noting that this model is prone to glitch pressure ‘pops’ i.e. in response to the sudden sound of a dropped spoon in a sink or a slamming door. Only Sony XM6 has fixed this issue.

The balloon test revealed the gentlest clamp force for large heads of any headphone tested to date: it compressed the large-head proxy by 3.4 percent, less than the newer Ultra 2 model and roughly half what the Sony WH-1000XM6 applied. For small heads, the clamp was mid range at 1.5% so no more likely to slip than any other. At 238 grams it is also the lightest of the four which means that unlike the Ultra 2, these stay put, with only a slight wiggle when shaken. The cups are shallower than the others so the investigator’s ears made light contact with the foam, which is not painful but is noticeably less spacious over a long session.

Misophonia triggers, tested live

ANC cancellation did not filter out wet mouth sounds but reduced chewing and slurping by a third, yet office keyboards were silenced outright. Using pink noise or music effectively removed every miso trigger tested.

Other tests

The gentlest headphone in the investigation in this setting. Eardrum pressure stayed low for the first half hour and reached only 2.5/5 by 90minutes, the lowest result of the four models tested. Note that there is a faint hiss which arrived at fifteen minutes and was the lightest of the set, distant enough that it took deliberate listening to find. Enough of the world still comes through these to avoid the sealed-off feeling: occasional birdsong through an open window.

Steady appliance noises were minimised respectably, fridge hum and extractor both down around three quarters, close enough to the Ultra to make the price gap look suspicious. A small warning: a spoon dropped in the sink produced a strong pressure click, semi-painful, and a firmly closed door produced a whump and a brief cutout.

Open Plan OfficePerformed middle of the pack in a busy open plan office. Phone calls down by a half and machine noises effectively excluded. They deliver good long session comfort for focussed work periods and if pink noise or music is played, all problem noises are effectively removed. open +close −

A particular stand out finding was the way it silenced keyboard tapping in a moderately noisy office. Worth one qualification: in a quiet room the same keyboards were reduced by two thirds to a faint flutter, so the office result reflects the cancellation plus the room’s own ambient noise covering what remained. Air-con dropped about three quarters, and the echo and liveness of the room softened. What it could not do was voices: a colleague’s phone call reduced by half and entirely intelligible. As before you always have music/pink noise as extra masking. Longer use periods was fairly comfortable.

Usable, which given what the Bose Ultra did on the same route is worth highlighting. Larger bumps produced an occasional pressure whump rather than a constant cutout. But engine rumble dropped by about a third, and vibration came through the bus frame as normal. ICP Pressure became noticeable from minute ten but remained bearable. Announcements stayed audible and general awareness was OK, which is a real safety point for anyone who travels alone.

Supermarket In a very noisy environment their uneven ANC allowed some irritants to come through more irritatingly. Pink noise or music is required to create a bubble of calm, noting that if you are already overloaded those are poor options.open +close −

While these usefully cut back the fridge hum by three quarters – this served to make the store musack and the shopping cart clattering a bit more intrusive, not less, because cancellation does less to block them. On a day already depleted, the pink noise meant to fix that became its own irritant, one more input to filter rather than a relief, and the session ended in overload. The conclusion drawn from it: pink noise for verbal-processing work, music when visual and social load are also in play. Earplugs if you just want everything else cut back evenly.

Restaurant / CafeThey are a reasonable option thought less quieting in a noisy environment than Sony XM6 or Bose Ultra 2. With pink noise or music playing they solve all the problems but on a high stress moment earplugs will be better still.open +close −

Honest limits. Cutlery on plates was barely helped and stayed clear, sudden crockery and laughter came through just as sharply, and background music gained presence once the low background hum was reduced. Not an ideal quiet recovery tool if you are sitting down already a bit frazzled. These are effective in such a loud environment with pink noise or music. Foam earplugs are the better instrument in this environment.

Besides beating three pricier rivals on music and speech, these turned up a second oddity in the test lab and in the field. As the cheapest and lightest pair they had the weakest seal of the four and finished last on mono-frequency blocking. Yet… they produced the least eardrum pressure and head clamp force of anything tested, and in a real office silenced the keyboards outright. All of this to make them the first choice for pressure sensitive users.
